Overview:
Achieving a fair opportunity
for health for all of New Hampshire’s people requires understanding the causes
of health disparities and collectively acting to advance health equity. Simply put, health equity is achieving the
highest level of health possible for all people. A person’s health is determined by many things
including their income, neighborhood, education, family, and access to
care. People can only make healthy
choices if they have healthy options.
And more, people need to live in places that support a healthy
choice. Personal factors like age, race,
ethnicity, language, gender, sexual preference, or disability can make some
groups more vulnerable to poor health than others. Data shows racial, ethnic and language
minorities experience higher rates of death from preventable illnesses. The population of minorities is growing in
New Hampshire. By reducing health
inequity for minorities, we will improve overall community health. Advancing health equity requires addressing key
policy and program decisions to undo systematic disadvantage for racial, ethnic
and linguistic minorities.
